APEX

ÂPEX Is a generative landscape art project responding to the conditions of the Anthropocene,

where the lines between what is possible and what is only imagined are constantly shifting. Simplified circles give way to hyperreal spaces and it is unclear whether at any point in the transition they resemble a landscape that one could actually inhabit.

At what point do abstract shapes start to resemble believable environments? Each viewer may experience this work differently, depending on where they draw the line between realism and abstraction, natural form, reality and fantasy. While landscape art is traditionally understood to represent natural forms, it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between the natural and manufactured.

When the code runs its course and a static picture emerges, a thin barrier seems to be crossed. The work tests out the limits between reality and hyperrealism, between abstraction and surrealism, blurring distinctions between them.

The Process

Reference

The series is inspired by the beauty in nature and the power of mathematics. It uses golden ratios Fibonacci function and wave functions to create a fully generative landscape art made entirely with code. inspired by the Fibonacci sequence In Particular, and “The Power Of Limits” mathematics book by Gyorgy Doczi which explores form and ratios in math equations and unveils the beauty of nature mathematically.

In between

We tried hard to find the balance between a photo-real terrain and noise like patterns - struggling between real and unreal. These were feeling like candy.

Definition

It was many attempts until we said these spirals, craters and ridges are it! We love how simplicity meets noise

Canyon

Thanks to Sofia Garcia’s great feedback we took that landscape feeling towards canyons, deserts and red rocks feeling - we connected more and more to these earthy like miniatures.

Color

After locking that red rock vibe we could really explore the colors. With our rocky direction we kept experimenting without feeling too colorful.

We love how a picture can be painted with code. Check out how Apex is drawn! a continuous splash of randomly colored circles, brewed in a box blur stew. Clouds were added naturally at the end, almost by themselves - because the atmosphere was right ;)
